I started a Rock Band in High School

A long time ago when I had a head full of hair in High School circa 2008 or 2009. I got together with a group of Astronauts who were Rock & Roll musicians on the side. We believed the next frontier for music was the vacuum of outer space. Together we created the Sound of Space Band.

How it happened

I was in Mr. Kane’s AP Studio Art Class in Carmel High School. My assignment was to create a piece of art that could be seen through a design of shapes.

Equalizer Guitarist: The Rocket man

Through some deep space exploration I discovered an audio equalizer design that is typically seen on old radios and stereos. This design had a solid theme of sound, music, and technology. Which led to finding the lead guitarist a lonely Rocket man who worked his job five days a week. On the weekends he did some side gigs on the moon for a Grey Alien.

Mobile Signal Drummer: The Dark Side Dweller

After finding the Rocket Man I began searching for the other members to complete the band. Keeping in line with the technology theme I decided to use the mobile phone signal strength symbol. I journeyed to the Dark Side of the Moon and found my fiery passionate Drummer who was ready to join.

Vinyl Wi-Fi Pianist: The Astro-Man

I continued searching for potential members but was struggling to find someone who was a good fit. So I decided to focus on the design again. I wanted something that was far away, future forward, and vintage. The technology design symbol I picked was the WiFi Signal Strength. After some deep space exploration I found an Astro-Man who was a Classical Pianist. He mixed the WiFi with a Vinyl Record backdrop being played by a Turntable from Saturn. The band was really coming together and now we just needed vocals.

Power Vocals: Major Tom

We were tirelessly searching for a powerful singer for the band and it led to us traveling across the universe. When suddenly our ship’s sensors picked up a powerful signal next to a super nova. We journeyed closer to this power source. The ship’s hull could barely handle the energy from it so we got as close as we could. Off in the distance I saw a human figure singing on the surface of the super nova. I relayed a message over to him asking who he was and he replied back this is Major Tom. He was lost in space, so he joined the band. The technology symbol I picked for him was the Battery Power Icon and it was back dropped by the super nova.

The First Gig

Finally our band was assembled and ready to rock. I booked the first gig which was on the moon. Thankfully we were able to get a ride through the Apollo program. The Astronauts were able to smuggle their instruments onto the spaceship’s cargo bay. Our gig went great and was transmitted through my art to the Evan Lurie Gallery in Carmel, IN. During the performance the band members came together to form a masterpiece that had a complete view of the moon’s horizon.

After this success I went onto create my next master piece: Carlos Santana LSD Electric Snakes. It was published in Carlos Santana’s autobiography The Universal Tone. The full story is here.
